Returning from a holiday, Alison and Ken find themselves locked out of the UK, following a political shift. They’re confronted by Barry and Valentine, two Entry Officials who know a lot about them and are blue-skying their new profession, trying things out. Barry is, by nature, a bone breaker. Valentine a psych artist. The play ends happily with a bonfire of newspapers and a corpse, followed by a not so happy knock on a door.
Robert Royston’s play The Struggle ran for a month at The Gate theatre in Notting Hill. In South Africa, before he emigrated to the UK, Robert worked as a journalist on the Rand Daily Mail and other papers as, variously, reporter, feature writer and deputy news editor, before moving to Macmillan Publishers as an editor. Alongside this, he ran an independent press publishing local writers, and edited a collection of poetry in the Heineman African Writers series.
