"Helen’s Dream" is the first in a cycle of radio plays (“A Love Like Ours”) exploring the relationship between composer John Ireland and his brilliant young student, Helen Perkin.

Set between 1927 and 1962, it follows Helen as she navigates love, ambition and mentorship in a musical world where every opportunity for a woman comes with a cost...

Michael Simms taught 9–13 year‑olds for many years before working as an interim headteacher and consultant in challenging settings. He later completed an MA in Creative Writing with the Open University and now focuses on writing for performance and poetry, with a particular interest in forgotten artists and moral dilemmas in history.
